For dockapps, I've used wmmaiload quite often.

John, I just remembered (or was reminded) that Opera gives a system-notice pop up in the bottom right corner when new e-mail and RSS feed items are available. Not sure that's quite what you're looking for. Like any good e-mail client, you can also set the option to leave mail on server. The pop up lasts a few seconds but the mail panel will show how many unread emails you have if you leave it open.

Thanks gents,

For now, I'm going to stick with MMM.  I've been using it for over ten years and am very fond of it.  It runs in the DOCK of the taskbar and in JWM and, of course, feels completely familiar.

I'll look at some of your suggestions in the future when time permits.

A related question...

How can I set up an association in DSL v4.1 so that a file with a specified extension opens up in Sylpheed when double-clicked?  Is there already such an association?

Thanks,
John

Edit dfmext. Use the tool in the DSL menu (apps-tools-dfmext GUI).
