The 384MB RAM requirement probably assumes that you are only adding the OpenOffice.dsl extension and not a bunch of others (IE: Samba, Abiword, etc).

It is possible to run out of memory on a 384MB RAM computer if you load up OpenOffice.dsl along with a bunch of othe extensions.

My advice is to use the OpenOffice.ci extension with DSL version 0.7.1
This version uses little RAM and leaves plenty of room leftover for your other extensions.

I made the firefox.tar.gz as an example of a simple user created extension based on the existing download script. I was hoping that it would be an easy example to get users started making their own extensions. The openoffice.dsl after a download and install of openoffice. Both use alot of memory. The ci files are the "second generation" of extensions. It would certainly be easier to have to maintain only one type of extension in the case of these two applications. I am open to what is best for the users.

However, since (as far as I know) there are only 4 cloop devices available and one of them is already used up by the DSL distro itself, the user is limited to only 3 *.ci extensions that can be in use at one time.

So this means that *.dsl extensions also have value.  For example, firefox.ci is a great package for low-RAM computers, but firefox.tar.gz is great for users with more RAM who are already using up all 4 cloop devices.

So in the firefox case there is a benefit to maintain 2 separate packagaes.
