I just installed the distro into my HDD, and it gives me 3 resolution options. I would like to use 1280x960, but it is not listed. How do I change to 1280x960 resolution?

How do I change the username dsl to something else?

Try the Xvesa application to try different resolutions. You might need to install XFree86 for particular monitor settings.

I don't recommend changing dsl's username. DSL has been designed around this user specifically, and changing it will mean a whole pile of extra work. I suppose it's possible that most things dealing with user dsl go by the user id rather than username, but I haven't yet had any desire to delve into that.
If you don't intend to use the myDSL system or backup/restore (i.e. if you have a traditional debian-style install), and don't mind tweaking some settings youself, you could always just add a new user.

1280x960 is not listed in Xvera. How do I get the 1280x960? I want the 4:3 ratio.

In that case, you will need to use XFree86.dsl/XFree86.unc - both are available from the DSL repository.

To adjust Xvesa settings in DSL you can edit the .xserverrc file in the /home/dsl directory by hand to achieve strange resolutions like the one you want to achieve. Just edit the part that says something like "-screen 800x600x16" I did it at 1280x960x16 myself for kicks and giggles and it works and also gives me a refresh rate of 87hz with the standard Xvesa server (in DSL-N RC4). A surprise to me since I have been trying ways to get Xvesa to render higher refresh rates than the 60hz or 74 hz that is standard with my video cards. The refresh rate issue has been brought up time and again in the forums but folks just don't realize how much memory and iso space Xvesa saves while delivering near perfect functionality, save the ability to adjust refresh rates. I am a fan of Xvesa even at 60hz due to its efficiency compared to a full blown XFree server and I like the fact that DSL uses it. Just takes a little getting used to, that's all. My remasters with Xfree didn't work out with Firefox unable to load and such (due to my errors no doubt) and I have learned to love Xvesa. Oh well, 'nuff said.
