I'm new to DSL, and I'd just installed it on my HP laptop. It's got an integrated SoundMAX card, AC97 I believe. On boot, during autodetect, it discontinues halfway through with an error that some part of modprobe.conf was missing.

I'd installed the ALSA set from MyDSL, with the gnutils and synaptic/apt enabling sets like it instructed. Booting with dsl alsa from LILO works, and some things appear to compile or process related to ALSA.

After doing this, in XMMS, no matter what I set output to, asides from the Disk Writer plugin, everything gives me an error message, to the tune of:

"Couldn't open audio. Please check that:
1. You have correct output plugin selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly."

There is no audio output, and in DSL's system information bar in the lower left corner, there's no audio control. When I try running "aumix," it reports, "aumix: error opening mixer"
Any help is much appreciated.

The OSS sound drivers are already present in DSL, so why not try these first before installing the ALSA drivers.
For both OSS and ALSA, autodetection and autoconfiguration often fails, so you may need to manually set things up.  You can search these forums and the web for OSS and ALSA configuration tips, but let me set you on the right track -
It would be a good start to identify the exact model of Analog Devices SoundMAX chipset ... then you will know which driver needs to be loaded and configured.
It can get a bit confusing because this chipset is integrated into other chipsets as well, like the Crystal.
Possible OSS drivers will be ad1816, ad1848, ad1889, cs4232, cs46xx, i810_audio, via82cxxx_audio.
ALSA drivers will be snd-ad1816a, snd-ad1848, snd-intel8x0, snd-via82xx.

ace2005 -

Do a search of the forums for cs4232. You should find the answer easily. It has been covered many times.

Good luck

Sorry, I did a search as you stated, but did not find any info on how to configure my sound driver using DSL for my Dell Isprion 3200 Pentuim II with the CS4232 sound chip. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Chuck
