Hi,
I had a problem in Knoppix
I tried to boot DamnSmallLinux, and I had the same problem
...still no sound...
Sound is not a problem at all with Suse 9.1, nor it is with Slax, a bootable live cd from Slackware.
the system sound card:
an intel AC97 i810 onboard soundcard on my brand new Dell Dimension4600
What I allready tried:
booting kernel 2.4
sudo
modprobe i810_audio
modprobe snd-intel8x0
tried test sound in kde:
***NO SUCCESS***
insmod snd-intel8x0
gave a lot of errors: no such file or directory
booting kernel 2.6, without any other cheatcodes
sudo
modprobe i810_audio
modprobe snd-intel8x0
tried test sound in kde:
***NO SUCCESS***
booting with cheatcodes:
knoppix26 alsa=snd-intel8x0
***NO SUCCESS***
So, have to try something else...
So at the moment: learning more on Suse 9.1
Does anyone had a simular problem? :p

Try downloading and installing the alsadebs.dsl extension. Please follow the instructions as specified in the "info" file on the mydsl repository web page.

Also, you can use the "search" button to search the forums for the keyword "alsa".  Choose search "All Forums" "From the beginning" "or newer".

In the Knoppix forum kgndb wrote: I had the same problem with Knoppix3.6. If I type knoppix26 at the boot prompt the i810_audio driver seems to be installed but sound doesn't work. When I add alsa=intel8x0 to the boot command the sound works.
So for Knoppix:
Hay, there, this solved my problem.
I booted Knoppix, pressed F3
gave the command:
knoppix26 alsa=intel8x0
and there it was: I had sound.
Have to try this with DamnSmallLinux
Thanks people...

Remember: the system sound card:
an intel AC97 i810 onboard soundcard on my brand new Dell Dimension4600 was the problem...
Annex: just tried with kernel 2.4
knoppix alsa=intel8x0
And here too the sound just works fine...
Nice thing, nice...
I let you know about DamnSmallLinux...

dsl does not have the "alsa" drivers included on the base liveCD

You must download and load the alsadebs.dsl extension file in order to use alsa with DSL.

FYI, you can also load the driver without specifying the type of sound driver and knoppix or DSL should auto-detect the best match.

IE:

knoppix alsa

dsl alsa  (after including the alsadebs package and following instructions, of course)

Thanks, I'll have to try that.
