and paranoid about accidentally screwing your hard disk.. OK, you can always unplug the hd, but it would be handier to just give an option at boot time.. lazy me :)

2. dsl nonet
would make it impossible to access internet.
would be handy in teaching. Making sure that the kids don't surf in internet..  Jep this can also be done by physically unplugging the cable from internet.

I can still manage to force a machine to get dhcp and mount drives manually. Anyone know of a way to prevent more than just auto-detection?

You can always remove user "dsl" from the sudoers list and then add the sudoers list to your backup, eg. filetool.lst

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as "absolute security" if you allow a malicious person to gain physical access to the hardware.  That's just the way it works.
