I know that this is a stupid question but can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to get my DSL to have a GUI (graphical user interface)

You should be getting Fluxbox (the GUI) by default when DSL is started.
Can you give us some more info on your system? (cpu, ram, video card, etc)
Are any error messages displayed?

My system is 248ram
23 GB hard drive
cd-rom
cd-rw
pentium 4
i just get a text based OS (kinda like freeBSD before you install KDE) i just think i need a line of code to start the GUI
Type "startx" and see what happens.
Linux is a derivative of Unix, and BSD is Unix. So it should feel very familiar. ^_^
Also, what video card do you have? Motherboard?
If it's a OEM box (like Dell or HP) give us at least the model name.
Have you tried framebuffer mode? If not, type "fb800x600" at the Boot: prompt. Without the quotes, of course.

startx gives me
could not find kernel image
ok i tryed framebuffer mode if i did it correctly but it seems no matter what i do i get a error
cloop: error -3 uncompressing block 688 65536/65535/25142/0 16277268-16302410
my laptop is what i am now trying to run it on its stats are
compaq armada 1700
96 memory
4 gb hard drive
