roberts, what are your thoughts on XFCE? As you said, This distribution is aimed to people who want more nice looks, functionality and newer tools, and I suppose XFCE would be a nice addition to your system (specially for its gtk2 themes integration).
Speaking from my experience (since I too have a pet distro), I ran a 600MHz/256Mb system with xfce and some gtk2 apps(namely firefox and gaim) and it worked splendidly fast. I suggest you try this out. And since you are going for newer kernels, perhaps you should try to get as much wi-fi drivers as possible, and implement an portable device automounting system. A nice looking file browser wouldn't be bad either. So now let me stop preaching to the choir and congratulate you on your new project. Good luck!
