I have tried selecting the file i wish to save and clicking on add to filetool.1st but nothing happens. All i get is an end of output message. I tried typing in the location of the file that i wanted to save in filetool.1st using beaver but when i shut down the system to see if it worked it froze while saving the backup files....

By default the home/dsl directory is included in the backup.
Which device did you choose and how did you enter it in the backup/restore GUI?

It sounds like you might be running DSL, not DSL-N. Either way, there should be a backup/restore item listed in a sub menu of the main menu. That should open a window with a text field and three buttons. You will need to decide the device on which you wish to back up. The mounting app in the bottom right hand corner should give you a list of the devices on your system. It should have something like "hda1" for a hard drive or "sda1" for a usb drive in DSL and "uba1" for a usb drive in DSL-N. Just type the device name in to the text field on the backup/restore application (example: uba1), and then hit the "Backup" button. After you backup the first time, DSL should automatically restore the backup on boot and automate future backups when you shut down. But this will only work on file systems that can be mounted read/write.
