I had been running dsl-2.4 and could not get my sound card to work on a Compaq Armada 1750 laptop. So on a whim I installed dsl-n. It still did not detect my card but I entered "modprobe sb io=0x230 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330" and it took it. Then I downloaded xmms and tried the "tone:/1000" entry and presto! I had sound.

I had been trying all kinds of things (check out my post in the other forum), but apparently I could never get the "sb" module to install correctly.

Now I am happy -- Let's hear it for the 2.6.11 kernel!
