the stupididty of doing bussiness

ok, i use a varity of oses : linux (ark, dsl), windows ( 98se, 2k, xph), bsd (free, open) and beos

so i need a new disk for my win2k box, the other was keyed up pretty badly, so i called my local computer shop, thinking they would get me a retail copy, well they would not, they said i should be running windows 98se as my cpu is only a p2/450, ok now i think 98se is ok, but not for that box.
"so why cant i run 2k?" i asked, "its not a home os" was the reply
and they would not sell a copy to me!, even tho i was going to pay full price (285$)!
now thats just plain stupid!

anyone for stealing?

Steal yourself a copy!; I mean if they wont sell you a copy, what other options do you have to get one? (none)

Yes i know stealing is wrong, but gezzz they're asking for it.

Well thats just what I think, so having said that i take no responsability for your actions... (i'd go for the 90 year old network admin bag-snatch)

sorry, but I somewhat agree with the sales guy

Having run my own small computer biz it's really in nobody's best interest to help you make a bad decision. Spending $285 on Win2K for a P2/450 probably isn't a very good idea. I looked at TigerDirect right after reading your blog and found a 1Ghz computer WITH Win2K for $224. A friend of mine just bought a referb from them that was a 2.something Ghz, cd burner, 512ram, 120Gb HD with WinXP for $300. Of course if it were me I would have tried to dissuade you from buying Win2k for a 450Mhz computer, but in the end would sold it to you. It's your money. In your defence, Win2K is very usable with enough RAM on a P2/450 and I would choose it over 98SE also. Just makes more sense to me to buy something else and use that machine as a firewall or dedicated server or something. Just my 2cents and not trying rip on you or anything.

buildin me a c3 .....

true, im building me a c3 based matx cpu, that should be able to takeover the p2's job ( and parts ) without caseing anything but a os issue - still no 2k retail (never use oem once you istall it you cant transfer it)
