Linux is an operating system kernel. The term is also used to refer to an operating system that includes that kernel and many utilities, especially the GNU utilities.

DSL and Linux

Damn Small Linux uses the Linux kernel and its own selection of utilities such that the sum of the parts does not exceed 50 megabytes.
