Running Windows2000 and Firefox, and the registration process keeps failing, claiming that I dropped part of the URL in the link. When I followed the instructions for a manual method/ procedure of completion, the exact same error handling codes were generated by your system.

OS+Browser: DRDOS+Lynx2.8.4 ; Windows98+IE6 ; Windows98+Firefox2.20 It is all the same.

I registered, received the confirmation, sent the message to dsl.reg

but am still not permitted to post in the forums.

BTW, my question is about the X400 DSL PCI modem from Xtreme Networks:

Is there any means for using it under Damn Small Linux ? It came with Windows only drivers; Xtreme Networks no longer exists, so there will be no new drivers from them; I saw in ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net that this card can be used under Linux with ndiswrapper v.14 or later but have no idea about how to install this under DSl, if at all possible.

Found this site by searching on 'permission to post'. Latest DSL 4.4.10. Opera852 package. No permission to post. Dillo would not let me log in. I installed to /dev/hda5 after booting from live CD. The laptop rarely lets me boot from CD. I boot to hard drive with loadlin: loadlin linux24 root=/dev/hda5 rw vga=791 (If I add initrd=minirt24.gz it puts me in a shell which I 'exit'). How, without reinstalling, can I use loadlin to specify: mydsl=hda5 dsl=toram etc.

Users having problems

Please note: This Wiki article exists because there is a DSL community. Several of us have tried to get John to make a public statement about what the problem is. John did not request the information noted here. I tried requesting information here so he could debug the problem. Apparently this information has not been sufficient to get the problem fixed.

1. Re: helping, what about translation of the FAQ page into French? If it makes sense I could try

Fioddor: It makes perfect sense. Please, create an account in the wiki and just go on translating. You'll get a personal page. This is not the right place to keep on discussing.

2. DSL problem / Forum problem:

When I registered a few weeks ago but no confirmation mail came. When I came back today, I wanted to repeat the registration but it said "email already used" AND asked for a username (in order to get a new password) but I forgot both from the other time (since no mail came and no use was possible)

My question:

Im an absolute Linux newbie, no idea even of "installing" those demons (and its not even called installing in Linux I remember).

What I would like to try out is PHP with mysql (which I used with wXP) and if I run DSL from a stick, it should be possible to add PHP and mysql I think? (Monkey web server seems to do what I would use Apache for, otherwise) (for a php example, have a look at the chat window at http://nofacebook.bplaced.net So:

what do i have to do for "installing" php+mysql (download brings a .tar.gz or so, and then?)

Fioddor: Please, read section "Extending DSL with MyDSL" in the wiki's home page.

AND

where is the webfiles folder (the htdocs as it is named in apache) ?

AND

an USB question:

DSL lists USB devices (sticks) and allows reading and writing. So far so good, but it does NOT accept a USB stick modem (as most of the UMTS providers offer now)

is there any way to make these modems work with DSL ?

is an answer possible here, in this page? thank you or in the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DAMNSMALLLINUX mailing list?

would be a real great help

I'm trying to post a query in the forums but unable to do so, the site says i dont have permissions! what do i have to do to get permission? I need to know if i can add direct FB on DSL? Username:smoothcriminal(nimitzz@indiatimes.com)

???

I also registered and tried to post. Have just bought the DSL book and have booted the CD. My questions are mainly to get some idea of how I can proceed on a pet project of mine. username: egillott

I'm yet another person trying to evaluate DSL and can't post on the forum. I'm registered, I confirmed the email, and now it says the moderator has to approve me. What a nuisance to get a simple question answered!

If looking through the articles noted on the main page of the wiki isn't sufficient help, it would help if you established an account on the wiki
Once you have done that we can use your User Talk page to discuss what you might read to understand the process of downloading and creating an ISO image. This article is just an initial contact point for those who are having trouble getting on the Forums (quite a few folks, lately).

If you can't get registered on the wiki, come back here and give us an email address we can use to help you get registered on the wiki. Please remember to obfuscate the email address so it can't be automatically harvested by a (ro)bot for spamming you. Enter your email address in the form: someone at example dot com. Fewer bots spot that form. To really protect yourself, open a gmail, hotmail, or yahoo email account before publishing its address here.

We'll help, but it's best we find a place that doesn't clog up other communication here.

Squid user

  • I can access the forum from Dillo within DSL. Firefox--v1.0.6 from within DSL or v2.0.0.12 from without--cannot get past the top-level page. All the login links loop back to the same page. The register links open the registration form but its content is silently ignored when submitted.
    • It turns out that this is caused by an interaction between the DSL Forum software and the squid.proxy. Squid only implements HTTP/1.0 and as a consequence strips some of the HTTP headers that the DSL Ikonboard uses. I don't think this is a bug. Many sites, including Squid's Home, use Ikonboard and this is the first time in my (10-year) experience with squid that I've observed this behaviour.

Unknown user

I am somewhat of a noob to the *nix. I used it at school and now use it at work and I have made some small accomplishments getting this far but I am unable to make my DSL-based system hard-drive bootable. Due to hardware/BIOS limitations I'm currently booting from MS-DOS floppy and then running loadlin to get started.

Now I have two questions about the hdinstall function and I'd like to post to the relevant forum but I have no such privilege. I can not find documentation or other reference as to how to get posting privileges. Admins, if you're reading this, please give me access. I have the best intentions.

Nothing urgent, just wanna know what is the barest minimum install?I just want comp to boot up and browse internet, trying to see if it can fit on a 14mb flash card....just for fun. I am running my machine and seeding the torrent for DSL, it's the least I can do...it's been pretty busy!

-My problem is with installation : Need DSL to work on a Compaq LTE Elite 4/50CX Laptop (circa 1994, no CD-ROM, no USB) I have tried removing the hard drive and installing (FrugalGrub, HDD install, tohd=/dev/sdb1) using a notebook enclosure and LiveCD on another comp. Feels like I'm almost there but I keep getting error messages. Tried getting onto forums to post, but it seems that might be a pretty exclusive club!

My DSL issue (one of several unfortunately):

When I try to mount a floppy I get the following error message: Error: mount: relocation error: mount: undefined symbol: blkid_known_fstype

The disk has been formated using DSL with fdformat

The computer is a Satellite 2140CDS (450MHz, 32mb RAM). I am running DSL 4.4.10, which I have installed to the hard disk.

Registered, but no confirmation message. Changed e-mail address to the gmail one, mail came. After clicking the link i got a message: "Sorry, we could not validate that request. If it was made more than 90 minutes ago, please start the procedure over again." Got another account on another e-mail server, the same thing. Still unable to post.

Something new: After entering the code manually: "An error occured, not all of the required fields were sent from the validation link. Please ensure that they whole link was entered, it's possible that your email clients auto-wrapper cut the link in half. Please try again." coronzon88_at_gmail_d_o_t_com

Other Problems with Damn Small Linux

Booting from USB

I just unpacked dsl-4.4.10-embedded.iso to my USB drive. I can get it loaded up to the two..penguin screen but then it gets stuck on "Checking for for usb". Can somebody help?:X I've tried booting it with:

  • dsl fromusb frugal waitusb
  • dsl fromusb frugal
  • dsl
  • dsl waitusb

to see if that would help. It still won't startup without getting hung up.

Booting from DOS based USB disk via Loadlin

I have bootable USB flash drive that is booting to a WIN ME DOS boot disk image. I want to use loadlin to launch DSL from DOS because there are some DOS utilities that I want to run from this same USB drive (I have an autoexec.bat file that I made into a menu). DSL appears to load the image, gets through the detecting USB phase, but thereafter gets stuck on trying to find a CD-ROM from /dev/sda1. It'll keep trying to find a CD-ROM on sda1,sda2,sda3,sda4..... until I get impatient and just force the computer to shut off. I think the issue is that DSL is insisting upon loading from a disc, though all the files it needs to load are on my Flash drive. Essentially I'm following the exact same directions at http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Loadlin_Install Only all my files are on my USB drive. If it helps, DSL notices my flash drive as sdb and not sda where it's wanting to look. My source files for DSL are from the current dsl-4.4.10-embedded.zip. I have the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file in the root of the drive along with isolinux folder in the root of the drive, with loadlin in the isolinux folder. I have a batch file in the root of the drive called "dsl.bat" which reads (minus gaps):

@ECHO off

cd isolinux

loadlin @options.txt

my options.txt file in the isolinux folder is the recommended default below (without the gaps, not sure how to put in a break). I tried adding "fromhd=/dev/sdb1" but that just lead to an error where it said it couldn't find the knoppix filesystem.

linux24

root=/dev/ram

rw

initrd=minirt24.gz

vga=normal

ramdisk_size=100000

init=/etc/init

lang=us

apm=power-off

nomce

noapic

quiet

BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix

Just curious what I need to do to make this work?

If you could please email me at w3s7@mecha geek.com replace the 3 with an "e" and the 7 with a "t." Delete space between mecha and geek.

Also, who would I talk to about donating webspace/bandwidth by setting up a DSL mirror?

Omega Scroll Wheel Mouse

Problem Statement

I'm unable to use my mouse with scroll wheel. Is a generic mouse, Omega.

All appear to boot OK, as soon as I move the mouse the pointer reacts OK for less than a second, then freeze and I must to close the session with the keyboard.

The same mouse run OK with Knnopix, Kolibri, and other Linux.

Suggestions

Have you tried the suggestion at Frequently_Asked_Questions#How_can_I_get_the_scroll_wheel_on_my_USB_mouse_working.3F?
