Fanless IDE-CF Mini-ITX Silent Computer System

Running a fanless computer with no moving parts is an exciting experience. Once you use a Mini-ITX System, it is amazing how noisy a conventional PC sounds in comparison.

This IDE-CF Mini-ITX System is powered by the Epia 5000, which is not the most powerful computer but does run Damn Small Linux very well. This setup has enough horse power to get 99% of what I need to do on a computer accomplished: shell sessions, writing scripts, checking email, listening to audio streams, and surfing the web.

For some folks, this is all the computer they will need and the process of running DSL in frugal mode (similar to the way it runs from a CD) will decrease the risk of file corruption and vulnerability. This is really the type of computer my father should use. ;-)

Often I find myself booting up my Epia instead of my more powerful development box because I really enjoy the quiet of the fanless Mini-ITX System. In addition, I really like its energy efficiency in comparison to a conventional PC.

512MB of compact flash is enough to hold DSL and quite a few of your favorite extensions, settings, as well as a good number of personal files. We use the frugal install because by writing to it as little as possible, the life of the CF card is extended.

This setup includes:
-1 Morex 3688 (including power supply and all standard attachments)
-1 Via Epia 5000
-256MB PC100 SDRAM RAM
-1 CF100 IDE adaptor
-1 512MB Compact Flash Card with DSL pre-installed (FRUGAL method).
