Hi everyone

First, congratulations to DSL developers. I have done real new life to my old Toshiba 300CDS laptop, with P-MMX 166, 32 MB RAM, 2 GB hdd, yamaha opl3sa2 soundcard, cdrom and modem.

I have installed DSL into hd, running sound, running cd...all fine. But problems comes when I try to reproduce avi films or divx. I downloaded mplayer.dsl and xine.dsl and I installed first gnu-utils.dsl and dsl-dpkg. When I try to launch mplayer, it says "Illegal operation", and close itself; in xine, when I launch the app as root, it remains on screen, but if I select play file option, DSL entire hangs completly. If I as root use in xterm the command xine '/cdrom/file.avi', the name appears in xine window, but killed itself with the text in xterm screen saying: Xlib: extension "XVideo" missing on display ":0.0", and a message in dmesg that display this text: _alloc_pages:0-order allocation failed 0x1d2/0.

After days crashing me into the xine, I downloaded Geexbox, in order to check if my laptop can reproduce avi or not, and the answer is "yes" and with mplayer as player embedded into Geexbox.

So, how I can install an avi/divx player into DSL? what I mess? Has anyone succeed installing xine in DSL on laptop?

Just another thing, related to another post about booting toshiba laptop from cd. In order to install DSL, I must boot from the floppy, enter in dsl 2, hd-install and just done DSL install in Laptop. The same in older PC as Pentium-S 100 with BIOS award PRIME-C.

eeeeeeeeep, what spec is the machine you are running this on?
Posted by ico2 on Nov. 10 2004,14:19
ooooops, didn't read your post completely, it could be that the machine just isn't fast enough, but that shouldn't be a problem.
prehaps the mydsl is not properly working/libs have been removed in the most recent version of dsl that were required.

Hi, ico2

I have already installed the last version os DSL. I think the problem would be that in XF86Config don't appear neither gl or ext. I only have pex5.so, xie.so in modules. I have tried to install the full Xfree86 and it became a nightmare following the instructions present here in other thread.

About the hardware, I know it goes, because for geexbox is enought for running avi. But I prefer to use DSL for all my tasks, also avi playing.

can xmms not play avis?
Posted by davide on Nov. 10 2004,18:22
it may depend on what file you're trying to play and what size it has.
with 32M of ram you can easily play a small video but Ireally don't think you can play , say, an entire divx movie.
i can play mpeg and avi movies easy enogh w/xmms. may you should check the plugins? dsl has no documentation but xmms has plenty on the net. good luck!

I believe the mplayer version in the repository requires
a minimum cpu of PII-MMX or better...
I could be mistaken, and you state your cpu is MMX enabled..

Perhaps there is an older less-intensive version we could
build an extension from.

About xmms, I have read a lot of posts from a variety of sites. Always points to avi-xmms plugins, but I can't compile in DSL because of library lacks. Also I have been seeking for avi-xmms package for debian, but no chance. There was a reference to marillat debian package, but there only found xmms-mp4, and couldn't install for dependencies not meet.

If someone knows how I could install the plugin for avi/divx and from where, it would be very nice.

About 32 MB memory, with Geexbox I reproduced shreck in avi format. A little bit slower than other pc with more Ram, but it works.

In the other hand, don't you think it would be very interesting having large video avi reproducing in small, ancient and deprecated machines? So, you could gain a new multimedia player for your living-room, updatable, and cheap, very very cheap. In geexvox, movix and womp pages are projects refered to building a cd/dvd divx player with old machines, adding remote infrared controls. But in order to achieve this with DSL, it would be very nice a multimedia version that runs in older pc's.

i think avi requires no plugin but i am not sure.

avi needs a plugin for xmms

That's right, and the plugin compilation is impossible with the standard installation, so really the plugin don't exists for DSL

I can get xmms to run perfectly....i can play cd's, streaming audio from internet, etc.....but I still cannot get XINE to work right! It seems to come up OK when i click on icon, but there is NO SOUND! There is sound for xmms. I downloaded a file [.deb] lidvdcss but that didnt work. I had the same question on the KNOPPIX forum for my KNOPPIX HDD installation on another computer cause I also couldnt get XINE to play audio, but when I downloaded the libdvdcss file, it works now on that other computer. I am using an IBM 233 mhz with 64MB ram. I know its slow but it does seem to perform ok so far. What do I have to do to get XINE to play audio? If I click on the play button, the cd starts and ypou can see the little wave form moving around and title of song scrolling but no sound! bob

Yesterday I success running xine in DSL with my toshiba 300CDS with 32 MB RAM. The secret lies in swap memory. I formatted the hd in two partitions, with the minor one having 160 MB; after I mount with mkswap this partition, and xine ran.
The problem (yes, another one :) ) is I can't play avi with certain amount of frames. Xines sais something about my machine is too slow, running lower frames. But nothing appears. In the other hand, others avis can be played if they have lower frames. Do you know any solution, like emulation, or convertion?

Yeah, buy more memory.

Running xine on a PC with 32MB of RAM is asking a lot from the machine.

Even 64MB will be a huge improvement.

You could try conserving memory by killing all unneeded applications like xtdesktop (the program that provides the desktop icons), the "slit" apps like wmnet, mount.app, etc and the bbpager.

Each one of these programs will consume up to and sometimes more than 1MB of RAM if they are running on the machine.
