when getting java from java.com it gave me several options to download it. which one do i get? these were the choices:

Linux RPM (self-extracting file)        filesize: 17.73 MB

Linux (self-extracting file)        filesize: 18.22 MB

Linux x64                   * filesize: 17.23 MB

Linux x64 RPM      * filesize: 16.82 MB

Self-extracting would be the choice. There's also a java mydsl extension, which is a little smaller than the newest one.

#1: No, they are different.  If you want to use .rpm's you'll have to convert them to .deb's.  It'll probably be much easier for you to use the self extracting one (I'm guessing you can just execute this normally like a makeself).

The mydsl extension is 1.5.0 runtime, whereas I think the newest is something like 1.6.0R2..

edit: RPM is Redhat's package system, just like mydsl is DSL's. So unless you use a Redhat based distro, they are little use to you..

Ok java is up and running great. Now to figure out where I'm supposed to get flash 7 since the link for it is broke...
