I am trying to use vlc on DSL...anyone have any pointers to making it work?  I tried the debian apt-get but get an error:

gnome-vlc: Depends: vlc (=0.7.0-woody.4) but 0.2.92-8 is to be installed

Thanks.

Haarvik, I've managed recently to pick up VLC using the
synaptic install script available in other posts on this site.
Unfortunately though, with respect to just DVDs, I can't get
VLC or Ogle to play smoothly (things missing in Xlibs) with
DSL 0.6.+. For earlier versions of DSL though I didn't have
too much trouble getting just DVD capabilities (Ogle).

Without knowing exactly what you did to install vlc, my guess is that you installed the wrong version of the software. I would try editing your sources.list and going from stable to testing or unstable and trying an installation of vlc.  Keep in mind that going to unstable will increase your chances of messing up your system.

And Synaptic is a great tool to determine the dependencies between various packages. I recommend using it to learn more about your install process.

PS: I wouldn't install the gnome front end to vlc.  DSL does not contain the gnome libraries and you are inviting dependency hell if you install this front end.  Kinda like installing a KDE app on a non-KDE system.

Good Luck.
