I have an old p90 here I'm trying to turn into a ADSL usb router with x client and browser. 32mb RAM.

I'm using a 64mb compact flash card since that's silent.

I don't expect to be able to do this straight away so here's my plan:

- install onto a slightly bigger (300mb for example) hard drive jus for breathing space

- install a very small distro that includes X, such as DSL

- now add a browser if needed (not needed with DSL)

- add ppp, later kernel with Alcatel USb speedtouch support and alcatel microcode, usb core too. Plug the PCI usb expansion card in.

- use a boot disk initially to boot

- try to transfer everything over to the 64mb CF disk. If space runs out external storage such via the spare USB slot could be possible.

Result:

- able to browse web silently
- router is always on but silent
- more demanding programs can be accessed by ssh and XDISPLAY variable or stronger once that's working. server in another room or cupboard.
- rdesktop or vnc to access Windows box in another room

Possible problems, can you advise? :

- DSL too big with ppp support and the like or won't be easy to add
- DSL needs a swap partition
- "create a 200mb partition to start with" <- a requirement?

Can you advise as to whether DSL is the right thing to start with for this? The other possibility I'm considering is Gentoo but that looks fairly problematic too.

Comments?
