Traditional 4.2.5 HD Install Problem

Hi,
I'm trying to do a traditional hard drive install of 4.2.5 on sata
grub does not seem to install correctly but i do get the lilo prompt
it does start to load dsl, but then i get an error message

installing to /dev/sda3

add "root=" to boot option

does anyone know what this means and how to fix it
