USB Printers

I just installed DSL-N, after using DSL for a while.  One of the problems I had with DSL was that I couldn't get the printers to work.  So far I'm happy with all that DSL-N has.  But I still can't get my HP Deskjet 722-C working.  I plug it into the USB port.  After some searching, I found some documentation from another Linux site that has helped me get that USB port to show up with the printer hardware next to it in CUPS.  But when I go through the CUPS Administration interface to assign the driver and all the other set-up, some drivers give me "Job Completed" even though nothing happened or I get a vague Error message for other drivers and "Job Aborted".

Any help is appreciated, and I'm not afraid of the command line, if I just knew what command to invoke.

Don't know if this will help but here is a howto I did many moons ago on using apsfilter.

Well written "how-to".  For some reason unknown to me, that didn't work either.

Here's the weird part (to me) I tried Ubuntu on this setup and managed to get the printer working.  But Ubuntu is just too big and the computer crawled through everything.  Tried Xubuntu and the installation just hangs.  But DSL and DSL-N have worked like a champ...except the printer thing.

so the battle continues.

I don't know if this sheds any light, but from the < hplip site >:

Question: Are drivers available for the Deskjet 710C, 712C, 720C, 722C, 820Cse, 820Cxi, 1000Cse, 1000Cxi; or LaserJet 1000, 1005, 1020, 3100; or Color LaserJet 1500, 2600 printers?

Answer: These are non-standard host based printers. Currently there are no plans to support these printers in HPLIP. Ghostscript print filters for the Deskjet products can be found at the pnm2ppa project
