How do I get MPlayer to start up when I open an *.flv file? I want to click on the *.flv file and have it start to play automatically.

I assume you mean for dfm with DSL 4.x... see dfmext.lua or add manually in ~/.dfmext

I'm using DSL 3.x, not 4.x. The Find feature can't locate any files named .dfmext or dfmext.lua. What do I do now?

Switch to 4.2.4.

Or change desktop/file managers... or something else like adding a mplayer button to emelfm.

If using emelfm, you can also set up a file association in configure - file types. You can edit MIME associations in mc as well.
