When I see photos on web pages, they look darker than they're supposed to.

How do I adjust the brightness?  Is there something I'm supposed to configure in Firefox?  or xzgv?  Or something else?

Exactly how do I get into xgamma?  I have no idea what you're talking about.

It's a command line utility to adjust monitor gamma (color channels, or all together, brightness).

It does seem to need a full X server to use. So no brightness correction for Xvesa. Or how about just in your monitor's own settings?

I can't change the brightness settings in this monitor, because I use this monitor with another computer (with the aid of a KVM switch), and that would mess up the settings there.

I am currently using Xvesa.  What do I need to switch to?  How do I switch to this alternative?  All I've ever used under DSL is Xvesa.

The switch is pretty easy, just get one of the X server extensions (XFree86.dsl, -.unc, or Xorg-7.2.uci), generate a config file, move it to /etc/X11 under proper name, and edit /home/dsl/.xserverrc. These steps have more instructions in the extensions' info files, as they differ a bit for Xfree and Xorg.

I followed the instructions for switching from Xvesa to XFree86.unc .  But when I rebooted, it refused to let me into an X-window, and I had to use xsetup.sh to switch back to Xvesa.

Is there a way I can switch WITHOUT having to reboot?  That way, if something is wrong, I can correct it MUCH more quickly instead of having to wait for another reboot.

And why would XFree86 refuse to boot properly?  I even used the "lspci -v" command to determine what video card I have:

OK, here's step by step for XFree86:
- get out of X (ctrl-alt-backspace) and a root terminal (sudo su)
- XFree86 -configure
- the screen will blink a bit when it autoconfigures your hardware. The new config file is in your current directory, called XF86config.new. Check it with your default editor and change if needed.
- Copy this file into /etc/X11 named as XF86Config, and remove all old XF86Config-starting files.
- Edit /home/dsl/.xserverrc as told in the hint, to XFree86 and -nolisten tcp as the only argument
Then just startx should do it. If you need to change settings, just get out using ctrl-alt-backspace, change the config file, and startx.

Oh, and an explanation for why it didn't start; Intel's early chips 810 and 815 need the intel driver (i810) to function at all, as they need some main ram allocated. Usually the generic vesa/vga/svga should work, but some chips are like that..

I went into a root shell and typed "XFree86 -configure".

As instructed in the resulting message, I typed "XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new".  But all I was greeted by was a blank screen and a cursor shaped like "X".  I had to use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to get the screen back to normal.  The shell showed error messages:

Yes, that's exactly what was supposed to happen. You only started X to test the new config, so it's just the correct resolution, moving the mouse, and the X pattern in the background.

1.  Go into a root shell.

4.  Rename this file as XF86Config .

6.  Copy the file "xserverrc_for_XF86" from /home/dsl/XFree86_config_files to the /home/dsl directory.
7.  Rename this file ".xserverrc".
8.  Enter "startx" in the root shell.

But it still doesn't work.  When I enter "startx", I get the message:

xinit:  No such file or directory (errno 2):  no program named "/root/.xinitrc" in PATH

Specify a program on the command line or make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin
is in your path.

Worse, sometimes things get so messed up that I have to reboot to get XVesa to work again.

Well, you need to get out of the root shell to startx, I forgot to mention. "exit" and you will be back as user dsl and can startx..

1.  Open an EmelFM window and a Beaver (editor) window.
2.  Open a root shell.
3.  Enter "XFree86 -configure".  The screen will blink a bit when it autoconfigures your hardware. The new config file is in your /root directory, called XF86config.new. Check it with your default editor and change if needed.
4.  Copy this file into /etc/X11.
5.  Rename this file as XF86Config .
6.  If necessary, remove all old XF86Config-starting files.
7.  Copy the file "xserverrc_for_XF86" from /home/dsl/XFree86_config_files to the /home/dsl directory.
8.  Rename this file ".xserverrc".
9.  Go to DSL menu -> Exit -> Exit to prompt
10.  Enter "startx".

But it still doesn't work.  The screen resets, but things don't work the way I'm used to, and I have to reboot to get Xvesa back.  To add insult to injury, the pictures are STILL too dark.

What now?  Why isn't XFree86.unc working like it's supposed to?  Would xorg72.uci be better?  How do I get that working?  Please give me the whole procedure.  I need ANSWERS, not cryptic hints.

Your screen darkness hasn't yet been adjusted with the xgamma tool. XFree or Xorg is required to use the tool. What do you mean with "things don't work the way I'm used to"?
I'm no psychic (yet at least), so please describe your problem a little better.

After I enter the command "startx", things look different.  The changes:
1.  All windows I had open before are gone.
2.  The icons on the desktop are gone.
3.  When I click on the main DSL menu (whether through the right-click or clicking on the bottom-left corner of the screen), I can only see the ONE option that is highlighted.
4.  When I minimize a window, I cannot see what it is.
5.  EmelFM refuses to open.
6.  My Mozilla Firefox window is the wrong size.  The small size is too small, while the expanded size is so big that I can't get the scrollbar on the right hand side of the screen but do NOT get the horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the screen so I get scroll right.
7.  The only way out of this is to reboot and use xsetup.sh to switch back to Xvesa.  Going to DSL Menu -> Setup -> Xvesa just leads me to an error message saying that I cannot change Xvesa settings because I'm not in Xvesa.

Also, the computer gives NO indication of what happened.  How do I even know if I'm in XFree86?  And if I am, how do I even know if it's set up and working properly?

Should I try xorg72.uci instead?  What makes xorg72.uci so great?

What's the complete procedure for installing xorg72.uci?  I need the whole procedure, not a few cryptic hints that will take several more responses to decipher.

You would know because it says so when starting (Running XFree86 4.3.0 debian prerelease et al) and you get a XFree86.0.log in /var/log.

Xorg would likely be better due to newer drivers and better autorecognition. Changes for it are mostly just name changes, and of course path change in .xserverrc because it's in /opt not in /usr/X11R6.

So, I hope these steps are complete, I haven't used xorg72.uci in a while:
1.  Go to DSL menu -> Exit -> Exit to prompt
2.  Type "sudo su"
3.  Enter "/opt/xorg72/bin/X -configure".  The screen will blink a bit when it autoconfigures your hardware. The new config file is in your /root directory, called xorg.conf.new. Check it with your desired editor and change if needed.
If you need to use X-based file managers / editors at this point, exit from root shell with "exit" and then "startx"
4.  Move this file into /etc/X11.
5.  Rename this file as xorg.conf .
6.  If there are some, remove all old XF86Config- and xorg.conf-starting files.
7.  modify /home/dsl/.xserverrc to read: "exec /opt/xorg72/bin/X -nolisten tcp"

If you went back to Xvesa for graphical file managers and editors, exit to prompt now.

8.  Enter "startx".

If you still have weirdness, those or other symptoms, please post your xorg.conf and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log in pastebin.com so we can take a look at them.

WHAT IS THE MATTER?  All I want is pictures to look the way they're supposed to rather than unnaturally darkened, but none of the solutions I try ever work.

Why does any old thing work for all of you while it seems NOTHING I do is ever right?  No matter how precisely I follow your instructions, these things don't work right.

Look, all I need is some step-by-step instructions that will work.  Is that too much to ask?  I'm not trying to cure cancer - I'm just trying to make pictures look right.  I'm just trying to use the Information Superhighway, and I keep running into speed traps.  I need to blow through these speed traps.

I'm just pointing out that the .info contains information to get you started, thus saving your time and other members' time.
Your hardware is known for its problems afaik, and because each of us do not have experience, etc. with everyone's setups.
So, I gave suggestions.

Writing in caps while not referring any input to the suggestions doesn't really help on either side :/

I've never seen the problem you're describing, dark pictures, in Xvesa or any other configuration.

Back on track, here's your xorg.conf edited, try it:

I just added Pixmap 24 to Serverflags, allocated some more videoram, and a DefaultDepth line in the Screen section. This should work for you.
If not, try changing DefaultDepth to 16. And post Xorg.0.log in both cases.

I'm terribly sorry for being a bad sport.  I owe everyone here a big apology for allowing my frustration to give me an inappropriate attitude.

I'm setting aside the issue of dark-tinted photos and videos for now and will revisit the issue later.

I figured out what my problem was in setting up the printing.  (The export command needs to be used in a NON-ROOT shell.)  I now know how to set up the printer reliably and have posted my procedure both on my web site and in the DSL Tips and Tricks forum.

Also, I went back to DSL version 3.3, since that's the version the book was written for.  I backed up my files and reformatted and reinstalled everything.  (I realize this probably wasn't necessary, but I was afraid that my tinkering had messed things up.)

I'm still trying to figure out how to keep the printer settings through the powerdown and powerup processes so that I don't have to reinstall the printer every time I boot up.

I will tackle the printer issue before I try anything else.  Not being able to instantly print the great advice I'm getting rubbed me the wrong way, because it required copying it to another file, saving it to disk, booting up my Windows computer, and printing it up from there.  And I let this speed trap get to me.

I'll revisit the overly darkened photos and videos later.

By the way, I REALLY APPRECIATE the small size of DSL.  If you think you've really messed things up, it only takes a few minutes to install this OS.  Windows won't install this quickly, and even most other Linux distros are big enough to require well over an hour or even several hours to install.
