Okay, this looks like a REALLY stupid question, but here's why: I am installing < Gentoo > on my computer, and X doesn't seem to work on it. I am just wondering what DSL uses for X (so that I might diagnose the problem).

Why ask this question here? Much better to ask it in the Gentoo forums!

Gentoo and DSL are setup totally differently, sure the basic theory will be the same, but still you need help from people who use Gentoo.

dsl does not use xfree86 as xserver.
it uses xvesa instead.

maybe that is the point.
install xvesa in gentoo and try it :->

Yes, Gentoo and DSL are different, but that is the point. I needed to figure out what DSL uses in X, because X doesn't work w/ default stuff on Gentoo. Not only that, but I am asking you guys because I'm not geting the answers I need at Gentoo either.

Sure will. I hope that helps; I have bad experiences with X. the serv doesn't work right in the configs of any other distro I've tried ('cept DSL of course!).

Technically, DSL uses the Kdrive servers instead of the standard XFree86 servers.

So if Gentoo has a Kdrive or 'tinyx' package on the package management list, install this package. Choose the 'Xvesa' server or the 'Xfbdev' server.

Good Luck.

If its not a laptop, did you think about buying an old graphics card that is known to work with XFree86?

maybe also running frame buffer in gentoo would work too...
