Networking :: NIC Not Recognized



DSL boots and runs just fine. However, the network setup reports no network card present. (AsusTek Broadcom 440x) Is there any way to get DSL to use the NIC to connect to the Internet? Or, is there a list of "recognized" NICs somewhere?

OK, I can get the card recognized, configured and connect to the Internet. Now how to I make the "fixes" permanent? I have a hard drive installation, but every time I boot up, I have to go through the modprobe b44 and netcardconfig to get things working again.

There must be a file somewhere that I can edit so that the setup is remembered.

There are three things that you need to know.

All of them can be obtained by reading the documentation or searching the forums.

1) You need to learn the commands for activating your network card instead of the netcardconfig script.  Search the forums for help.

2) You need to put the modprobe b44 and these commands in your /opt/bootlocal.sh script file.  This script is run at bootup time, similar to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in MSDOS.

3) Unless you are using a full hdinstall, you will need to use the backup / restore function to save your /opt/bootlocal.sh file and restore it upon bootup.  Read the documentation on the web site or search the forums for keyword:

*filetool.sh

and search

ALL FORUMS

and

FROM THE BEGINNING or NEWER

chagger01, I really appreciate your help. BUT, reading the documentation and searching the forums is a very, very poor way to get any meaningful help. If there is one shortcoming of Linux, it is the lousy help. These forums are supposed to be for HELP, not some smart ass reply about reading the documentation.  I read the documentation for hours and I search the forums for hours and get nothing in return. I don't care about how someone got some obscure, obsolute, underpowered system to sort of boot some distro. What I want is a suggestion for MY problem, with MY system. If you can't do that, BUG OFF and let someone who doesn't feel so superior respond.
