..and you were right Jason, xsane discovered my all-in-one on its own and automatically set itself up to scan. All this and it works from gimp-1.2.uci too.

I propose to re-submit sane.uci with xsane-0.995 included, it only adds +/-0.5MB - does that sound OK?

Good idea. There's no real point in factoring that out, I least I don't think so.
