Printers :: Firefox Printing Issues

Hi, I'm new to DSL & Linux in general. I'm trying to setup a kiosk system at work to use for our intranet.

I've managed to setup a network printer from the DSLpanel and done atest print & I've also managed to print from OpenOffice. But when I come to print something out from the BBC website using Firefox, there isn't anything coming out at all.

Has anyone got any ideas as to why this is so?

What's listed as the printer/print command under FF?

Try running FF from a terminal window and you probably could see errors/warnings if any.

If I can remember correctly, some had similar problems due to permissions.  Some used sudo before their print commands, or modify the corresponding lp printer spool directory

Hi

Thank for the reply.  The error I got from running FF under aterm was

Cannot open lock file '/var/run/lprng/lpd.515'
- Permission denied

I've tried adding the user to the lp group to no avail.

Now for the stupid questons. When you say "add sudo before their print commands, or modify the corresponding lp printer spool directory." The question now is where are the print commands & how would I modify the spool dir?

If you're using something like lpr to print, you can use "sudo lpr" instead - but it's better to change the permissions.  From your error, I'd check out '/var/run/lprng', and chmod it as neccessary.

It also depends how you set up your printer, i.e. if you're using CUPS/apsfilter.

Thanks for your help, having read through that other thread along with your suggestions. Iit now seems that I can print through Firefox.
