I have an old Micron with a 486 at 90MHz and (I think) 32 megs of RAM. It has 2 hard drives, both 1.05GB but only one is detected and works. It also has a (HUGE) ethernet card. The floppy drive seems to mess up anything I put in it; there was a Win95 bootdisk in there and it made funny sounds in the computer and my main machine. I downloaded a Win95 bootdisk from bootdisk.com and put it on a new(er) floppy and that didn't work either.

You guys are probably wondering WTF is this guy doing trying to get Win95 to work if hes gonna put on DSL anyway. Its because the CD-ROM drive is the type where you put the CD into a cartridge and the cartridge into the computer and I don't have the cartridge. No USB ports plus WIn95 and USB is screwed to hell anyway. Ethernet/Networking was my last choice, but it seems like the only one. I saw something in the Wiki about copying the files over to the hard drive and then installing from there via bootdisk or something?

My questions:
-Any way to get WIndows 95 working?
or - ANyway to get DSL on there without using WIn95.

Probably the easiest and most important questions are:
-Can DSL run on a 90MHz 486 w/ 32 megs RAM
-Can Samba, an http server, and an ftp server run on it?
-Print server? I have a parrallel port inkjet by Cannon (BJC-600)

BTW, everything is ISA slots...I think the CDROM drive is IDE, haven't really looked. Could I hook up my CDROM drive from my main computer and install DSL onto the HDD?

Do it the easy way.

Pull the hdd out of the slow box and use another box to install DSL, then swap it back.

And I fixed the wiki page. Thanks for the alert, there. You can use the "Talk" pages to report errors and make suggestions about locked pages.

Am I presuming then that there are no IDE connections at all? what is the floppy drive connected to? These are usually either on an IDE ISA card or straight into the board. If it goes into either of these, then there should be another IDE cannector for a HDD/CDROM.

If you HDDs are SCSI I also presume there are going into a ISA SCSI card which you would not be able to use it a modern PC. Depending on how important this setup is to you , you might be able to get a SCSI PCI card depending on the age of the SCSI type that is in the 486. There could possibly be a USB caddy which would then allow you to connect the SCSI drive into that and install it on a modern PC as well.

To replace a floppy drive is nothing there are not even a fiver in some places.
