i have tried many versions of damn small linux but they all hang when it says

"loading ohci1394.0..." what should i do?

Try the "nofirewire" cheatcode.

In other words, when the "Boot:" prompt appears when booting from the livecd disk, type in:

dsl nofirewire

and see what happens.
