It doesn't work for me! (i tried your suggestions with the tar and later with the UCI, both installed fine, but in firefox 0.9.3 i couldn't play the java games of yahoo)

I believe it is a matter of rights and membership of groups. ( in the "past" i frequently had to change opt/firefox ~/.Mozilla from root/root into dsl/staff) (and change the write permissions)

It is sometimes confussing who i am (root or dsl) and who is the owner of firefox...

I got an internal error on browser end no manager.... when i rebooted with the tar.gz in the root of my bootdevice. That's why i hoped that the uci would do better (but it didn't so that much better, firefox did startup but i can't use java)

i have same experience.
firexox.uci (version 8) and java and flash OK
firefox.9 and flash OK

firefox 9 and java NOT

The new opera.tar.gz works fine.

Looks like a good candidate for the *.uci rebuild.

The firefox-0.9.3.dsl wants to use a different java version..

I have completed a new java file ( j2re1.4.2_05.uci ) that works with
firefox-0.9.3.dsl..

I need to add a symlink to the existing firefox-0.9.3

I will post in testing shortly after I complete further building ..

I had minimal success with using this version of java in opera ..
