Hi, i accidentally moved some essential windows start up files, and i need to move them back. How can i move files on the hard drive using DSL booted from a CD? Thanks alot.

If you have Windows 95/98, you can open the emelfm file manager and navigate to the /mnt directory

Then right-click on your Windows partition (usually hda1 or hda2) and choose "Mount" from the menu.

You can copy or move files by highlighing them in the source window pane and then press the "Copy" or "Move" button and they will be copied or moved into the second window pane.

For Windows NT/2000/XP, you cannot write to these partitions NTFS type by using the base DSL livecd.

There once was a captive-ntfs.dsl extension package that could be used to do this, but it is not available on the main DSL package repository.

An alternative approach might be to download and burn an INSERT livecd:

Insert is the inside security rescue toolkit.  It is a 50MB Linux livecd like DSL and is designed for the purpose of system rescue and repair.  Some of the ideas in INSERT were built upon ideas from DSL.

The main advantage of INSERT is that it comes with a captive-ntfs install script so you can use it to write to a WinNT/2000/XP partition.

How do I transfer (copy) files from Windows ME directory: C:\windows\desktop\ to a USB Pen drive?

The ME operating system is trashed but the files are intact-can be viewed in DOS.

How do I mount the DOS directory?  How do I locate/mount the USB Pen drive?  Do I use the mv command or is there a simpler (non command line) way to do this using the emelfm file manager application?

It should be easy to do this with a WinME computer.

Boot into DSL with the pendrive already plugged in.

Then open emelfm and go to the /mnt directory

Your "C" drive is usually hda1 or hda2.  Right-click on it and choose "Mount" from the menu.

Your pendrive is usually sda1 or sdb1.  Right-click on sda1 and choose "Mount" from the menu.

Go to your /windows/desktop folder in the left pane.

Go to /mnt/sda1/ in the right pane.

Highlight the files that you wish to copy and push the "Copy" button and they will be copied from the left pane into the right pane.

When finished, go back to /mnt and select each device and choose "Unmount" from the menu.

Wait a few seconds.

It is now safe to unplug your pendrive.
