I use DSL a lot. I have recently been working with MS-DOS 7.1 on my Tobisha laptop. I have a Super MS-DOS 7.1 Boot Disk with the GRUB loader on it which has the "Boot From CD option," which is pretty handy. I can not just boot DSL from it, but KNOPPIX, Puppy Linux, or any bootable CD thanks to it.

Download It Here!

The above Super MS-DOS 7.10 Boot Disk is a customized DOS boot disk that has many more features than standard DOS boot disks. Therefore, it also supports NTFS/USB drives, mouse, and many more. To start Win9x(4.x) properly from it, please answer "No" when it asks whether to load PC-CACHE (disk cache program for DOS). For more details and information about this super boot disk, please read the file README.TXT inside.

care to share your GRUB menu.lst file pls?  I'm curious to see if I can use it somehow to boot a CDRW off this older lappys cdrom.

You should be able to do that easily enough with something like this:

changing the root to your cdrom device

Thx I'll have a look at that stuff...tho I'm not clear on how to remaster yet tbh. :(  I wanna try it & learn to do it but it seems so complicated an I don't always understand the instructions. :\

Remastering is unnecessary.  The links may mention it, but the reason they were posted here is just for the grub examples.
