try typing this...
" modprobe uart401 "
" modprobe cs4232 "
If that doesn't work, you may need ot tell it your resources..
cd to your /lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/sound directory,
Then try ...
" insmod uart401 "
" insmod cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5 "
Then exit your xserver by using ctrl-alt-bksp, and at the prompt,
type " startx" ...
See if you have a volume dock app in the lower right hand corner..

No I didn't get a volume dock nor did the sound work....got any other ideas...
Sometimes typing " rmmod soundcore" before running the modprobe commands helps..
Post up your lsmod output for us to see..
When you ran the modprobe commands , what errors did the command line
show you?
Also , you might want to apt-get the pciutils from debian,
then run "lspci -vv" to see what your card is detected as ..
