DSL-N is NOT a very good name for this exellent new os!
hope it isn't too late to change the name..

I can just imagine replying to question:
"What os are you using?"
DSL-N. I mean Not DSL but like big small linux..
I'm using DSL not. OK not DSL, so what are you using??

confusing and complicated

I mean how can a name be something-not or not-something?
I'm familiar with the naming of GNU=Gnu is Not Unix etc.. but dont think it is a good idea in this case.

(Better?) ideas:

DSSL Double Size Small Linux
LSL Large Small Linux / Larger (but still) Small Linux
BDSL Big-DSL
DSL-BB DSL:s Big-Brother
BB-DSL Big-Brother of DSL
100M DSL
DSL II
DSLx2 2x bigger than DSL
DSL Double Size Linux

Other ideas?
Am I alone with my opinion of the name?

Sorry for the negative feedback. I think DSL-N (the os) is a very good idea and good os!
I love DSL, but I need SATA support with my main machine, so the new kernel is what I need. I'll be using DSL with my (old) laptop as long as it lasts.. And with my small USB-sticks..

I really hesitate to say anything on this subject because I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but......

I think I agree with Anaconda. Great idea to have a second OS. Excellent initial effort to get the alpha releases out. Kudos to everyone involved.

I have to say when I first saw the Damn Small Linux - Not name my first thought was something a boss long ago told me. "Developers shouldn't do Marketing and Marketing shouldn't Develop"

I do like the idea of tying the two OS's together via their names but the "- Not" just seems a little lacking. I'm also not sure how the name will play for non-English speakers.

I think the bottom line on this subject is that the user community will learn to live with whatever John and Robert want to call this OS. I wasn't around for the start of Damn Small Linux but I'm sure that didn't sit well at first.

Just my 2 cents worth of thought. Thanks for your efforts.

imho call it DIESEL or any real word, not an acronym that always needs an explanation.

DSL -N is not DSL.

Something like gnu is not unix. Smile

DSL-N is not nano.

A rose by any other name.....

Since it isn't an extreme anymore (damn small) you should probably drop damn from the name.

How about
- Linux Light
- Kinda Small Linux (KSL)
- DSL+

I did suggest
DSL-B B for 'bigger'

I do like Linux Light, but some other distros have got that.

How about Frugalix ?

Doesn't need one- but as long as we are gassing around, how about an approx 100mb cap and call it " DSL Doubled " ? I really don't care what it's called as long as we get what sounds like the answer to a prayer.

If you want to follow the gnu style, might I suggest:
Un-DSL

"Un-DSL is Not DSL"

What do you think about XDSL, like eXtra-DSL?

Robert & John

I think it would be better not to fragment the DSL idea, but rather to generalize it.
Assuming DSL to mean Down-Sized Linux, the basic premise, you might envision a number of related products such as

1. DSL50 The heir of Damn-Small Linux, with a target size of 50M
2. DSL70 The heir of DSL-N, with a target size of 70M
3. DSL25, or whatever, a new skinnied-down base
and so on.

The word Damn may have out-lived its usefulness, now that you are famous.
