I am new to linux on a live cd. I am frequently asked to help repair dead computers for friends and family, and I recently encountered a pc that is either beyond my help, or is going to take a while to get back up and running. I was wondering if I could use DSL booted from a cd or usb (I like the usb option cause I got a small spare one) to retrieve data from the C: drive on this seemingly dead computer. If this is possible I would also appreciate a quick explanation on how to access the data.

Yes, you can do this - in fact this is why I got into DSL/DSL-N in the first place.

If you have 2 free USB ports, you can boot DSL-N from one of them and copy data from the HD to the other - remember this will only work if the PC BIOS supports booting from USB. If you have only one free USB port, you can boot from CD and copy data from the HD to USB.

The Wiki or a search through the forums will explain how to boot from USB/CD.

With just the standard NTFS drivers copying from is not a problem. The problem comes with writing to an NTFS partion. The Captive NTFS driver works (using the same idea as an NDIS wrrapper, but I don't think DSL-N has a Captive package -- yet. Captive is one of the reasons that I remastered DSL, and am remastering DSL-N.
