--edit--
This was my first post. It was meant to serve two purposes: 1. distro forums are always littered with requests for applications, I was just trying to give those inevitable posts a specific place to stay; 2. I was curious how other people planned to use DSL-N: there are alot of applications on DSL that I never touch; The poll was just an afterthought/experiment to see if I could edit the entires. Otherwise, I would have given it more options. I had already read that there would be no size cap, DSL-N would only be as big as it had to be. Of course, I shot myself in the foot when I placed the first vote...
---edit---
So here are some suggestions. Feel free to voice your opinion on suggestions that have already been made. Robert and John are busy trying to get us a stable system, so we should have some time to argue (politely:) amongst ourselves. This is by no means an official To-Be-Added list. Or even an unofficial list. Just a place for different users' ideas. I will try and add your suggestions to this list.
Before making recommendations, you might want to take some things into consideration:
Question Is it legal?
Question What does this program depend on?
Question How large are those dependencies? Would it really be worth the weight?
Question How difficult will they be to implement?
Question Would it be better, or for that matter possible, to install the program as a uci/dsl, and is it already available?

I have tried to note where a program is already available as a DSL extension. Please let me know if I missed some. Extensions found in the testing section are so noted.
Please test the DSL extensions in DSL-N and report working and problematic extensions here: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-n/f/viewtopic.php?p=360#360

it's a matter of personnal choice, i use among other apps:

thunderbird as mail client
kvirc as irc client
streamtuner for radio streaming
and i would appreciate to see those apps available, if not in the core system, through etensions
I also uses rox_filer along fluxbox in another linux box, i saw rox was available as an extension

I'm on the hunt for an OS for my home server (Epia EN15000). I want to install it on a compact flash card and support:
- Samba, NFS
- SlimServer
- Apache, perhaps
I need DSL-N because of the 2.6 kernel (I think), plain DSL doesn't recognize my network adapter. Otherwise SlimCD would be the solution for me.

256 MB would be a pretty good size.

512MB of ram is common and 512MB USB keys are getting reasonable. Both would have plenty of room to run DSL-N from ram.

I'd suggest not stipulating a size limit. Robert or John have already said they are going to keep it as small as possible. The new OS is going to vary in size to keep up with the new kernels (just my guess). I don't see an advantage to setting a size limit.

I like the idea of having just a basic set of apps (like DSL does) included with the base iso. Then having the myDSL repository of community built apps available to add the app you want.

I believe Samba (LinNeighborhood) should be a default application on DSL-N (and in my opinion, DSL). I realize it is part of the myDSL but it is the first thing always I download and configure. It is integral in setting up my desktop the way I want and adding the various data files I need.

As the Linux desktop establishes wider use, there will always be a need to communicate with MS desktops and servers. Samba is the technical connection to being able to communicate and it also demonstrates that DSL (and Linux) does not expect to isolate itself from the 'dark side.' Twisted Evil

Some or all of the codecs (especially the DVD ones) might not be in DSL-N because of size or DMCA. I would like the following apps:

Replace Mozilla Suite with the following:
-Firefox
-Thunderbird (or other e-mail client)
-X-Chat

Mozilla developers are focusing more on Firefox and Thunderbird than the suite.

I would like these additional apps:
-Latest Gaim
-GNOME games?
-streamtuner
-ipw (Centrino) wireless drivers
-extension for fglrx (ATI) drivers
-extension for latest nvidia drivers.
-extension for nvidia drivers that supported old cards (TNT2, Vanta, GeForce 1, GeForce 2, etc.)

I want the size limit to be 185MB because mini CDs can hold much more data than business card CDs, even though they are somewhat physically bigger. Mini CDs are also more widely available than business card CDs.

My requests are based on the ones in this topic

Many of those modules are already there waiting to be tested.

Also, John and I both feel, if an app is rarely used, why allow space for it?
The larger the iso, the more ram is will use when run toram mode.
So size and functionality will determine which apps will be included.

I think you should stick to basic desktop functionality and leave the rest to extentions the same way you have with DSL. The DSL Frugal model is a great system. People don't understand it, but that's largely because you leave too many options for install types, and the documentation that exists is not complete or easy to find. Keep your brand well defined and catch up on the documentation to minimize support problems.

I really like the idea of dsl-n. Many of the suggestions seem well supported. As long as I am comfortably able to run in toram I will be happy.

I'd like to see the QT 3.3.5 libraries included for sure.
